Game Recaps 08-09 Season
1/16/2009 - Update
Our boys basketball team has continued its winning ways in 2009 with three consecutive victories. We began with a 54-39 win at Napa Christian despite being down 17-3 at the end of the first quarter. We took a two-point lead finishing the half on an 18-2 run and then put the game away with an 18-1 third quarter. Brandon led the way with 20 points and his usual "beastly" rebounding. Aubrey's defense and fast-break baskets, many off of some fine passes by Chris Scott, sparked the comeback. He ended with a career-high 16 points. Our next game was an intense battle at Pleasant Hill Christian. We played some of our best man-to-man defense and held on for a 16-54 win. Brandon scored 21 points and David 20 to lead the way. Then we returned home to defeat Archbishop Hanna High School by a score of 56-44. Led again by David (19 points and 12 rebounds) and Brandon (17 and 16), Orinda Academy ups its record to 12 wins and 3 losses. The "Twin Towers" had great support with Aubrey adding 12 points and 5 steals, Dylan 7 points, and Chris 6 points and 5 steals. Already surpassing last year's win total with at least 10 more games to go, our boys play an important league contest versus Candell Prep in Oakland today and then return home on Tuesday, January 20th for another game against Pleasant Hill Christian School.

The Orinda Academy Boys Basketball team had a great week before winter vacation winning 3 out of 4 games and bringing home a 3rd Place trophy from the Geyserville Small Schools Classic. The week began with a 44-35 road-trip win over El Sobrante Christian School avenging last year's defeats against a tough league opponent. David Treas led the way with 23 points. In the first round at Geyserville, we dominated last year's champion, Leggett Valley by a score of 54-33. However, our 2nd round opponent, Pacific Union, was a last minute replacement due to a snowstorm and was led by 6' 8" Tyler Theisman who shot 19-23 (including two dunks and hitting all net on every jumper) and a total of 39 points. Our boys fought valiantly and when Dylan Goldman hit net on a 3-point shot from mid-court at the halftime buzzer, we were down only 10 points. Despite showing a lot of heart in the 2nd half, OA succumbed by a score of 78-61. Still, our boys came back strong the next day defeating the host, Geyserville High School, 53-42 in the 3rd place game. David led all scorers with 61 points over the 3 games which also included a 20-rebound game, but it was Brandon Davis who was named to the All-Tournament team. Besides his "beastly" board work and 47 points, Brandon was clearly our emotional leader on the court and carried us when we needed. Aubrey Love scored 32 points including a "double-double" in one game and stellar defense throughout, and Chris Scott provided excellent leadership and great passing with 13 assists. Overall, it was a great team effort and lots of fun. The boys head into the New Year with a 9-3 record and looking forward to this week's road games at Napa Christian on Tuesday and at Pleasant Hill on Thursday. Our next home will be on Tuesday, January 13th at 3:30 PM. Hope to see you there. Happy New Year to all! Mitch
Our girls team is still attempting to win our first game, but have showed steady improvement. We also showed great spirit and sportsmanship at Geyserville, provided great support for the boys team, and had a great time, too. Julia Friedman scored 25 points over the 3 games and was also named to the All-Tournament team. The girls will also be on the road at Napa and Pleasant Hill this coming week.

The OA Boys Basketball team finished up an awesome week beginning last Monday (12/1) with a 52-34 victory over Redwood Adventist followed by our trip to the Pescadero Small Schools Hoop Dreams Tournament. OA won the first two games over San Francisco Christian (55-47) and Pacific Collegiate (39-34) from Santa Cruz, making it four victories in a row. We lost a tough championship game (34-39) to the Bay School from San Francisco and came home with the second-place trophy. Then on Tuesday (12/9) in our home gym we exacted revenge on the Bay School with a 45-23 victory to bring our overall record to 5-2. As usual, the Twin Towers have led the way with David Treas averaging 18.4 points and 10 rebounds per game and Brandon Davis with 9.6 points and 12 rebounds per game. David also brought home an All-Tournament shirt from Pescadero, and has been our lead scorer in every game. Brandon had a monster game Tuesday with 14 points and 14 rebounds. The steady, good play of Chris Scott, Dylan Goldman, and Aubrey Love has also been a major factor in our success. Chris had 15 points against SF Christian and has averaged 8.5 points per game, 3.2 assists, and 3 steals. Dylan came off an ankle injury to score a career-high 12 points including three 3-pointers versus SF Christian, had a career high 7 assists in the rematch versus Bay school, and is averaging 3.5 assists per game. Aubrey had his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Pacific Collegiate and is averaging 6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2 steals per game. Freshman Jeremy Hansen has stepped up to provide strong support, as did Seth Viruet-Krevolin in the rematch with Bay School. I'm proud to be coach of such a fine group of young men.
Our girls basketball team has yet to win a game, but took the last two games right down to the buzzer. Julia Friedman has led the way averaging 5.9 points per game and brought home an All-Tournament shirt from Pescadero. Anissa Laval-kiyemba also provided strong leadership as well as averaging 3.7 points per game. Sarah Heyward, Maddie Murphy, and Kali Geertsen have provided strong support and some fine rebounding.
The boys will host Oakland Military Institute again Friday, December 12th and then the boys and girls will travel to El Sobrante Christian School for games on Monday. Both teams will then head to the Geyserville Small Schools Classic next Thursday (12/18). Kudos to all the boys and girls who are working very hard and represent OA so well, and to Ben Lavender for all his hard work as girls coach and co-athletic director. Thanks to all who have come out to support us and have made our home games fun and exciting community events.
