Community Service

Orinda Academy Graduation Requirement: 40 hours

All Orinda Academy students are expected to participate in 40 hours of community service work before graduation. Students have some opportunities to do community service work with school-supported projects, but they should expect to perform the bulk of their work by finding their own opportunities.
The goals of community service at OA are:
  • for students to engage in a community support activity that speaks to their interests and where their heart is
  • to learn to appreciate the opportunities to give back and the chance to see what a difference it makes
  • to connect service activities to learning about history, civics, psychology, and many other curricular areas
  • to experience outside-the-classroom opportunities for problem solving and looking at the world through a different lens

Advisors, teachers, and other students can help steer students to many fine opportunities throughout the Bay Area and beyond.

Some activities that our students have participated in:
  • sorting food at local food banks
  • shoe, coat, toy, and food drives
  • recycling program to support the Malala Fund
  • volunteering at the Marine Mammal Center
  • walking dogs at shelters
  • distributing food and blankets to homeless citizens
  • watershed restoration projects with Environmental Science class
  • volunteering for the Orinda Academy Crab Feed and Auction
  • crew for the Spring Arts Festival
  • fundraising hikes/walks/bikes for charity
