2024 Summer Program

We are excited to announce that Orinda Academy is offering a summer program in the Visual and Performing Arts.  The courses in the summer program satisfy Orinda Academy's  college preparatory elective requirement and the Visual and Performing Art (VPA) requirement, both of which will be led by our Teaching Artist and photographer, Lisa Foote. Both of these courses are intensive and rigorous, and specifically designed with neurodiverse students in mind.

For each course an Orinda Academy student completes (grade C or higher), they will receive a full-year elective credit.

This courses in this program are open to all San Francisco Bay Area high school students, grades 10-12, and may possibly fulfill your student's VPA elective credit. Space is limited, so be sure to read the course descriptions and submit your interest below!

Art as Craft is a studio-intensive course in which students devote their practice to versatile, ubiquitous mediums: cardboard, recycled materials, and the found object.

Students will apply skills learned in Introduction to Art Methods (or a first-year art course), and deepen their ability to read visual works of art and implement robust plans.

Students become acutely familiar with materials through exploratory projects, ranging from structural to decorative, miniscule to cavernous, whimsical to geometric. Students will also create their own materials such as inks from nature and papers from recycled objects.

The goals are focused primarily on process, rather than the subject.

Students are immersed in the study of foundational skills, apply those skills in creative ways, and hone their craft. Through iteration and experience, they develop capacity for artistic expression and an ability to cultivate expertise.

Extended projects are pursued throughout the course with planning, feedback, and communication phases.
