Don’t miss this unique day of self-advocacy training for educators, parents and students (age 10+), featuring a keynote presentation, DARE to Stand Up for Yourself, followed by separate breakout workshops for each group. This event was sparked by a SAFE student.
Educators: Learn to understand your students’ needs and abilities, and create an educational environment that supports self-understanding and self-advocacy.  Parents: Learn to understand your child’s strengths and challenges, and support them in their quest for self-understanding and self-advocacy.  Students: Learn to understand your strengths and challenges and advocate for the support you need.

SCHEDULE:

10:00 am – DARE to Stand Up for Yourself  – keynote with David Kessler, MA, LPC

11:10 am – Workshop I – 3 separate breakout sessions:

For Educators: How to recognize a student’s strengths and challenges + Why student self-advocacy is important and how to talk to students about it, with Claudia Koochek
For Parents: Advocating for Your Child: Understanding strengths, areas of need, accommodations and goals with Brendan Pratt, Ph.D.
For Students: The View of You with Kristin France, MA and Karen Grites, MS

12:10 pm    Lunch (provided)

1:10 pm – Workshop II – 3 separate breakout sessions:

For Educators: Building Self-Advocacy in Your Students with Kristin France, M.A. and Karen Grites, M.S.
For Parents: How a parent can model, teach and support self-advocacy in his/her child with the goal of the student ultimately advocating for his/herself, with Claudia Koochek.
For Students: Self-Advocacy – Picking the Right Battles and Using the Right Supports with David Kessler, MA, LPC
